Exam Question 5

5. What are some of the issues raised by Media ownership in the videogames industry?

An issue raised by media ownership in the videogames industry would be the constant battle for exclusivity. One example of this would be the distribution of downloadable content for the game Grand theft auto 4 which the rights was bought by Microsoft for $50 million. This gave Microsoft a certain exclusivity and popularity that other companies needed to earn money due to the fact that they had something other companies didn't have. This is just one fact that shows just how popular GTA4 was and what lengths companies would go in order to get their hands on a fragment of ownership.
A further issue with the distribution of the final product of GTA4 was the fact that during previous releases of the series, Sony had the rights to distribute before other consoles. This was good for Sony as it earned them more money having such ownership as the gaming industry is extremely competitive. However with the arrival of GTA4 Rockstar had decided on a first, to allow both Sony and Xbox to release the game at the same time. This caused an issue for Sony as they were used to having the privellidge of having the game before anyone else did, but now had to share their rights and in the long term lose money. Although this was a problem with Sony, unsurprisingly it gained Xbox a good reputation for having the game out at the same time as the playstation, and in the long run would earn them money that they may not have had if the player couldn't wait for the release for the game on the xbox and instead purchased it on the playstation.
All in all videogame ownership is a very competitive market and costs lots of money to gain certain ownerships and privileges which would then bring in money to their own companies. only very rich and popular companies can afford to make deals with industries such as Rockstar as it is so popular.

Production, Marketing & Distribution of Mario Kart

Production...

Who made it?

Nintendo which is a multinational corporation located in Kyoto, Japan.

How did they make it?

What technologies?/what consoles?
Mario kart is available on Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. Many would argue that is it better to play on the Wii as the DS screens are very small and with the Wii you can buy controls made to replicate a steering wheel. This enables consumers to get really into the game and becomes more realistic.

Who founded it?
Founded on September 23, 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi.

Marketing...

Who is the target audience?

Mario kart has a wide range of consumers as you can play it when you are 4 to 104, the advert shows family and friends playing the game with lots of variety in gender and age. This gives the audience the impression that the game could be fore anyone and the bigger the target audience, the bigger the profit.

What strategies were used?

The advert gives the impression that it is for anyone as there is a wide range of people playing it that you can see.

The game was released in Europe on 11 April 2008

OnLive response

Advantages
  • You can connect the Microconsole tv adaptor to play on your TV.
  • Good quality graphics.
  • Large variety of games to choose from.
  • Can play on either PC or MAC.
  • Enables you to play demo games before you buy them.
Disadvantages

  • Sales of other consoles may go down.
  • Lots of variety but mostly aimed at males rather than both genders.
  • Has to be an internet connection to play.
  • Have to be over 18 so will limit the age range of the audience.
  • So much variety of games and can only access using the internet so there is a chance it could slow down at peak hours.

What do you think of the game?
The game is good because of its location and because its so big the consumer has the freedom to go wherever. the graphics, we thought were good too.

Was it what you expected based on the marketing?
Because GTA has a huge fan club i was expecting a bit more variety within what you can do, we thought it was a little unclear of what the actual meaning of the game was. we feel that the front cover of the game misinterprets the game and creates an idea in your head that turns out to be different when you play the game.

What was unexpected about the game?
Based on the front cover of the game, we thought there would be more variety of what you could actually do, after observing someone play it seemed that a lot of the time there was meaningless driving around a big city. The front cover of the game therefore kind of misinterprets the game.

What difference did you notice between the sessions?
We felt the game was more challenging without cheats as it creates more of a difficult mission. By cheating it defeats the object of the game and makes it kind of ridiculous for example driving a helicopter through a large number of sky scrapers and driving a tank through a pier. The non cheater was a more exciting game to play and watch as it represents real life more than the other so players can relate their real world to the games virtual world more.
General comments:
We thought the graphics were pretty good and as we played it on a projector we felt that on an actual television they would be better. The violence within the whole game is very extreme and graphic. The collisions with people and objects were very realistic and graphic.
The sound is very good and atmospheric which adds to the mood of the game, the police sirens get louder as the police get closer which is a good way of putting stress onto the player. The police voices say lines such as 'smile for the camera' to irratate the player and taunt them. There is also a huge variety of dialougue within the game and you never hear someone say anyhting more than once, this way it doesnt get repetetive and annoying for the player.

Marketing for Mario Kart Wii

Aside from advertising in the United States, another region important to sales of Mario Kart Wii is Japan, Nintendo's native country. As such, the gaming giant has enlisted the aid of Japanese celebrities to help hock their wares onto the gaming populace. Above, you can see model Aki Hoshino and comedian Medaka Ikeno having the time of their life with their Wii Wheels.

UK trailer using the same technique of marketing involving celebrities to promote the game.
Analysis of trailer:
By having Celebrities play the game it catches the eye of the viewers and as the general public looks up to celebrities as role models this makes them think for example "if .... has it then it must be good!'
It is also a good advert because you can see people playing the game with the wheel so the audience can see the new equipment and how much fun the people are having when playing the game. In the advert you can not only see the people playing the game but you are able to see small clips of the game so it gives the audience a small idea of what its going to be like without giving too much away and keeping the mystery.
The advert indicates that there is no specific target audience as there is a big age range of people playing the game in the advert. This opens out the game to a wider audience and therefore makes more money.
