Write up of GTA4 Gaming session
Advertisments and websites included in the game are accessible both in the game and in reality. Physics of cars and movement add to the ecological validity within the game although the health levels give people a chance to play as they want to. You have the ability to break and enter, to lock vehicles and hot wire them.
The cultural diversity of the surrounding public and radio stations playing well known songs of various genres allows a wide variety of gamers to relate to the game. Although gamers can commit criminal acts within the game, there are still laws and regulations within the game, with police on the chase at all times, this also adds to the realism of the game.

Media Exam Questions 8 and 9
Question 8 what are some of the significances proliferation in hardware and content of institutions and audiences?
Our interpretation: Advantages and Disadvantages of increase in hardware and content?
Advantages the positive of proliferation is that there is more choice for the consumer and could open the market to many different types of content and widening the market for more games and consoles.
Disadvantages are that there are so many products available that consumer struggle to understand what they want and what is best. This is what happened in the US in the 1980’s and the consumers stop buying video games. Products such as Mattel’s Intellivision, Coleco’s ColecoVision and Magnavox’s Odyssey 2
Question 9 Think about the ways in which your own experiences of interacting with the video games industry might illustrate wider patterns and trends of audience behavior; write some bullet points on your consumption of video games?
Our interpretation: Using yourself as a perfect example, write how a company could attract you to playing your games and if you don’t play games then how should they go about attract you as an individual
Me: I personally find trailers on the Internet and television to be the most effective in my case and also not being to revealing but leaving some mystery to the game makes me want to go and buy it either in a store or online.
Question 1 and 2
Question 6
Cross media convergence is when a mixture of media sources are combined together in one project. Synergy is when two things together have a bigger impact on something than an individual thing.
Production:
Grand Theft AutoIV includes music in its game play. Players can have the option to listen to the radio, where they are able to listen to popular music
Marketing:
Cross media convergence is important as it can sell a product more easily as it would seem more desirable, an example of a product with it is the Xbox 360 as this plays video games and DVDs so the target market can be wider because there are more aspects that could interest people.
Distribution:
More distributors will be interested in buying the product, as due to the cross media convergence, there is an increased target market, there is more demand for the product.
Production:
In production synergy plays an important part because one media project can then influence another media project for example Tomb Raider was released as a video game then years later because of the success of the series a film was released and together sales would become larger.
Distribution:
If the original product was a success, an item based on that product will be more likely to be wanted by customers. Therefore distributors will want to sell this product to keep up with product demand.
Marketing:
Synergy is important when it comes to marketing as the follow up product can involve aspects from its original media product to create hype. For example, if someone has seen a film for example Alice in Wonderland the film came out, then whilst the hype for the film was still around Nintendo released a game, using footage of the film to promote it.
Exam Q's & A's
Technological Convergence is technology based around incorporating peoples needs in gaming. Its when there are different functions in one system.
An example of this would be the PlayStation 3 as it contains blue ray player, DVD player, video music, downloadable films and music, online PlayStation network, internet explorer, photo shop and a photo folder , able to play games and many other functions, all incorporated into one console - technological convergence.
An advantage of this is that it makes the system more applicable to the audience by this we mean people won't have to go out to buy other systems to play different functions when it is incorporated in one system.
A disadvantage of this would be that it would put other businesses out of profit and possibly business as they wouldn't be needed as the customers would see the benefits of having a system with technological convergence than having separate systems/consoles.
An advantage of the PlayStation 3 with technological convergence is makes it more appealing to audiences as its a cheap way of having everything you need in one console instead of having separate systems. It also benefits the company in terms of the console war with the Microsoft Xbox 360.
A disadvantage of the Playstation 3 is that it creates problems for its other products by Sony like the Blu-ray players and DVD players etc because it shows no benefits of buying the systems separate when you can have it all in one which overall would be cheaper for the customers.
However not all consoles/systems need to have technological convergence to be successful in the games industry market, an example of this would be the nintendo wii. The nintendo wii is a completely different games console to all of the other traditional consoles. The Wii is much more interactive and is targeted at a wide range of audiences instead of a selective audience that Xbox and Playstation targeted specifically. The Wii targets a wide range of audiences, including every single age group. You can play a wide range of games from racing games to fitness games where you stand up and are interacting with the console instead of traditionally sitting down and just playing.
Nintendo also produced the DSi, which has got some technological convergence, which is also targeted at a wide range of audiences. The DSi has got a camera which you are able to take photos on and upload them to facebook, you can also connect it to the internet which is a new advance from the old version. Brain Training is a game that has particularly appealed to the older audiences, which we have seen from the adverts as it has been advertised by famous celebrities e.g Julie Waters, Patrick Stewart & Nicole Kidman.
An advantage of this is the DSi is thaat
Exam Question 5
An issue raised by media ownership in the videogames industry would be the constant battle for exclusivity. One example of this would be the distribution of downloadable content for the game Grand theft auto 4 which the rights was bought by Microsoft for $50 million. This gave Microsoft a certain exclusivity and popularity that other companies needed to earn money due to the fact that they had something other companies didn't have. This is just one fact that shows just how popular GTA4 was and what lengths companies would go in order to get their hands on a fragment of ownership.
A further issue with the distribution of the final product of GTA4 was the fact that during previous releases of the series, Sony had the rights to distribute before other consoles. This was good for Sony as it earned them more money having such ownership as the gaming industry is extremely competitive. However with the arrival of GTA4 Rockstar had decided on a first, to allow both Sony and Xbox to release the game at the same time. This caused an issue for Sony as they were used to having the privellidge of having the game before anyone else did, but now had to share their rights and in the long term lose money. Although this was a problem with Sony, unsurprisingly it gained Xbox a good reputation for having the game out at the same time as the playstation, and in the long run would earn them money that they may not have had if the player couldn't wait for the release for the game on the xbox and instead purchased it on the playstation.
All in all videogame ownership is a very competitive market and costs lots of money to gain certain ownerships and privileges which would then bring in money to their own companies. only very rich and popular companies can afford to make deals with industries such as Rockstar as it is so popular.
Q4. Media comvergence
Media convergence is when two different media industries come together, in the hope that their relationship would be synergistic as the impact they would have together would be greater than the impact they would have alone. For example releasing a film and game at the same time would reach a wider audience and both industries could pool their resources and benefit greater from cross marketing.
Another way of which media convergence can take place is to mix both old forms of media with new for example using both television advertisement as well as advertising through the internet. For example creating a facebook page as advertising. As with GTA IV the main character Nicko Bellic had a facebook page created claiming him to be armed and dangerous and that he should not be approached, this made him seem more real.
Another example of media convergence would be games using film like advertisement strategies for example GTA IV released tease trailers to show the viewers what the game would be like and what the story owould involve
What impact have recent developments in technology had on the production, distribution, marketing and exchange of videogames?
With the technological advancement within the video games industry, games have become more complex in the way they are made. Prior to game engines, games were typically written as singular entities. A game engine is a software system designed for the creative and development of video games. As developments in technology have evolved, so have the game engines. With this break through in technology, game engines such as the ones used on GTA IV called Euphoria and RAGE are capable of HD graphics, real simulated physics and vast amounts of content. RAGE is Rockstar's home game engine that they created from scratch.
Distribution:
In the early days of video games, people used to be able to get codes for their games in magazines and mail order. But now due to the new technological age, more and more people are getting there games online. This makes it a lot more convenient for the consumer, minimizing the time spent on looking for that one product. And also means the consumers consumers can compare product prices and features to make a better decision with minimum effort required. On the other hand, many people dislike the idea of online shopping because of privacy. It is the number one reason that non-online shoppers do not shop online. since online shopping has been introduced, many different situations have occurred, where people have been scammed and robbed, when using their credit/debit cards online. With new programmes such as Steam and Onlive, the distribution of video games has completely changed. With OnLive, the idea is that you can stream games off the internet with no worrys for download times or installations. Steam is also a piece of software but unlike OnLive, you download not stream.
Marketing:
Marketing has become a key feature in selling a video game. The use of new technologies has meant it is easier to advertise online and on TV. With the internet and TV, video games can now reach a global audience at a much faster rate than ever before. Also advertisements have become more creative in the way in which they address certain target groups. However the main disadvantage of advertising online is the cost. Company pay both mainstream, and specialist websites to house a banner, or piece of their website to advertise their product/game. for example GTA IV payed millions of dollars to advertise their new game. This advertising caused a lot of controversy giving Rockstar lots of media attention.
Exchange of Video Games:
Video games can now also be; exchanged, traded or swapped in several different new stores such as 'Game' and 'Gamestation' people trade in their older games, and in return they get money of the latest games out. Also 'Ebay' has been a very regular place for people to buy and sell their video games. this is because, the price of the games are pretty much always cheaper, than what you would pay in the shops, also very quick delivery rates.
2. What has the impact of increased internet connectivity been on the media production, distribution and marketing process?
Viewers don't want to wait for a long time before being able to watch a clip, if your clips don't work fast enough because they use too much bandwidth, viewers again wont be happy. Bandwidth helps ensure that clips play back quickly and don't stall. Their are also ways to deliver good clips to people with a slow connection and better clips to those with fast connections.
So the faster a game loads and the better quality of playing it online, the more demand for games their will be for the internet. It is also cheeper to play using the internet even if you buy game, because you don't need to buy a console which costs a lot of money.
Easy access
An advantage of using the internet today is that you can play a game while doing other things. Say your at work and you need a break, you would just make another window and find a website with a game you want to play, it's technical convergence. This is where one object such as a computer does a wide range of different things. A game console mostly is for gaming or watching DVD's, the internet has a much wider range of things you can do. You don't need to get out, turn on and load up your Xbox while being on your computer at the same time, when a good, fast game is just a few clicks away. An example of this is the mini-clip website, this is a website where you can play a wide range of free games including mario, sonic and racing games. You don't need to register you just type in the website and play some fun filling games straight away. A disadvantage of this is that you can't play multiple player with friends as easily.
Marketing
An advantage of Marketing a game which is online and uses the fast connection we have today is advertising. If you are on your computer, most internet sites will have advertising some even connecting cookies which will tell the company advertising who is most likely to buy the product. If you see a games advert while you are online and able to get it very fast you are more likely to want to play it. Where as is you see a games advert in a magazine you might want to play it at the time but not get round to buying it. An example on a internet site that does this type of advertising is google, google can track what you are searching than will display adverts which are linked with you search. A disadvantage of marketing games online is that if your internet connection is bad or blips than it will be difficult to load the games.
Significances of Proliferation in hardware and content
From having multiple choice in hardware the audience are able to pick and choose to what suits their personal needs best. The ability to sift through the positives and negatives of such consoles as Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo the client can decide which is most suitable.
Again, the audience will take assurance from the fact that there are different consoles on the market, in the sense of competition. The more choice in the market, the less monopolisation a company holds over the consumer hence the price shall be driven lower and lower.
Finally, with so much competition of hardware companies will be forced to find new niche's in the market. This should lead to technological convergence. This can be shown with the latest generation of consoles: The Playstation 3 has the ability to play Blu-Ray as well as browse the internet and the Xbox 360 users being able to access Windows Live Messenger.
A negative of having lots of hardware on the market, for the company, will be that they are forced to spend more on development and marketing to get their product out there.
For the consumer, the downside will be the complications they may find when coming to purchase a certain product. If they are new to the market they may encounter problems when trying to decipher which console will suit them best, putting them of all together.
What are some of the significances of proliferation in content?
With having a variety of choice within in the specifics of the consoles is very similar to that of hardware. For example the competition with promoting games and content to the target audiences results in companies spending large sums of money to enhance their status in the market.
With there being too much content on offer to consumers, this would benefit them in limitless ways. I.e competition would be so high that each distributor would be forced to drop prices. Not only this, but designers would be fighting to be the best in their market leading to a better game for all. Unfortunately this would inevitably result in a crash altogether of the market. A great example of this was in the 1980's when there was so much variety in the market that the market deteriorated and critics labelled the gaming era as 'a phase'. Companies would be spending so much money designing content they would later be forced to lower prices lower than that spent on production.
A challenge for companies can be to get their content on the forefront of the market. They can attack this with 'synergy'. This is the marketing of a product along with another product of a different industry. In 1982 'E.T' was released. Companies thought they would attempt to increase their game sales by releasing the E.T game within the hype of the film.

Onlive Ads and Disadvantages
Onlive review
OnLive
- Bring gaming communities together eg. Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo.
- Easier for gamers to access games.
- With this, it makes it cheaper to produce games for the manufacturer and also the consumer.
- Less environmental waste.
- As consumers are forced to access games via the same website this is an opportunity for OnLive to monopolise on marketing.
5 Disadvantages:
- The awkwardness of PC game play. Every gamer knows the unfortunate controls that are given to us when we play a game via the PC or Mac. Unlike the major games consoles with specifically designed controllers when playing on the PC or Mac users are forced to use a joystick or keyboard.
- Internet connection is not consistent across the world.
- Would destroy the industry. Console manufacturers, designers, distributors, publishers are just some areas that would be affected.
- Socially the gaming community would be affected. Trading games, playing with friends, and borrowing each others games.
- The system would be liable to hackers, which could put the whole system down for a lengthy time.
OnLive response

GTA 4 gameplay
GTA 4 review
The game was so well marketed and I believe that due to being a first party game.
I feel that the success of GTA4 is driven by its derivatives in the GTA series.
The cheats; programmed into the game bring an unrealistic game play, for players who enjoy arcade, free roam 'mucking about'.
Rockstar brought a inter media advertising campaign, whereby posters were layed around major cities in the world, the music industry was endorsed due to radio stations, television advertisements, and the availability to make the audience want to know more about the game before its release. This caused major excitement and conversation about a new generation of gaming let alone the consoles.
The game is succesful is bring elements of real life and mixing them with unrealistic lives to cause a feel of excitment to 'play it your way!'
game rating 10/10
The game is good because of its location and because its so big the consumer has the freedom to go wherever. the graphics, we thought were good too.
Was it what you expected based on the marketing?
Because GTA has a huge fan club i was expecting a bit more variety within what you can do, we thought it was a little unclear of what the actual meaning of the game was. we feel that the front cover of the game misinterprets the game and creates an idea in your head that turns out to be different when you play the game.
What was unexpected about the game?
Based on the front cover of the game, we thought there would be more variety of what you could actually do, after observing someone play it seemed that a lot of the time there was meaningless driving around a big city. The front cover of the game therefore kind of misinterprets the game.
What difference did you notice between the sessions?
We felt the game was more challenging without cheats as it creates more of a difficult mission. By cheating it defeats the object of the game and makes it kind of ridiculous for example driving a helicopter through a large number of sky scrapers and driving a tank through a pier. The non cheater was a more exciting game to play and watch as it represents real life more than the other so players can relate their real world to the games virtual world more.
General comments:
We thought the graphics were pretty good and as we played it on a projector we felt that on an actual television they would be better. The violence within the whole game is very extreme and graphic. The collisions with people and objects were very realistic and graphic.
The sound is very good and atmospheric which adds to the mood of the game, the police sirens get louder as the police get closer which is a good way of putting stress onto the player. The police voices say lines such as 'smile for the camera' to irratate the player and taunt them. There is also a huge variety of dialougue within the game and you never hear someone say anyhting more than once, this way it doesnt get repetetive and annoying for the player.
The game has good graphics, interesting missions and an aim. Without cheats the game takes longer to change story, with cheats the game has a wider variety of playing styles.
was it what you expected based on the marketing?
The marketing was similar to the game play' they showed true to game screen shots. The characters are the same as what was shown in the adverts. The graphics are true to what was advertised.
What was unexpected about the game?
The game was true to the advertisement shown.
What differences did you notice between the sessions?
Without cheats its harder to get in trouble, and slower. With cheats you can basically do what you want. There is a wider variety of transport, weapons etc. Keeps your interest in the game.
Comments on the graphics;
The graphics are realistic, but are able to portray the game play in the best possible way. It looks really smooth and not box like so this gives more depth to the game and will make people want to play it as they hear better things about the game and how amazing it is. The gameplay is enjoyable as you can do what you want whether it is killing people or completing missions for people. It is also quite a large game and allows a lot of play time so you gain value for money. It is also quite an easy game to get the hang of as the controls are quite basic and there are numerous cheats to protect yourself so you can survive for longer and learn the controls more easily.
GTA 4 review
GTA VI
What I expected? Well, based on the marketing I was expecting a realistic game where arcade initiative had been forgotten. Past episodes of the Grand Theft Auto series players had been able to modify the lead character in departments such as muscle power and healthcare. However, on GTA IV, the game lived up to the advert, with boundaries being built as to where they would be in reality.
Unexpected? Not much really, since the game was announced people have been led to believe that nothing extra-ordinary can be achieved as it was in past episodes of the GTA series. The same old saritical advertising of real life companies in the game exists.
Cheat/Non Cheat? Personally, I prefer playing the game seriously. Everyone has a session with cheats but I find the game gets very boring after only a while. With cheats activated the outcome of your actions are predictable and soon become tedious. Without cheats the player can choose the path he takes in the storyline and what missions he undertakes.
Graphics? They have almost reached thier peak in what graphics can achieve, hence the technological convergence to the Wii Style gameplay.
Review Of GTA 4
- Every single GTA is practically the same as you can do all the same things except your are in a different place, different character and different missions.
- The graphics have got better as the games have been produced which is a big difference and is a way to appeal to a different audience.
- However as they produce new games every so years, they develop them for new consoles so if you are really GTA fan and you want the new game then you are going to have to buy the new console which is a clever way the company has done this. But could potentially mean that the game might not do as well as people may not be able to afford the new technology.
Yes I suppose it is what we expected as they are all nearly exactly the same. However the adverts may percieve the game to be more real life than it is. The adverts also give a false graphics view as they are better quality than the game. However it does persuade people to buy the game.
Things that were unexpected about the game were the ways in which you activate cheats. To activate a cheat previously you would type it a series of symbols for the play station and the cheat would activate. Where as on the new GTA 4 a little mobile phone pops up where you type the number of the cheat and then dial and it becomes activated.
Although we thought that because it was raved about so much from the adverts and the magazine reviews, that it would have a completely different feel about it and a lot different from the previous games. However we thought it was pretty similar to all the other ones and nothing was really unexpected.
The differences we noticed between the session we played with the cheats and the sessions without the cheats games were:
- the session with the cheats we had a laugh and mess around as there is always away you won't die and you can boost your health up and get out of sticky situations and get the police off your back. Also you can have pretty much whatever you like and can kill with what ever weapon you want.
-the session without the cheats you are more careful with your driving and the situations you get yourself with as your are aiming not to die as you need to start the level again and you loose money if you get busted by the police.
We thought the graphics had improved since the last game which has made the gaming experience better and more enjoyable.
We thought the action content was more realistic and life like, however not far off being exactly the same as the other games.
We thought the violent content contained in every game ahas been pushed to the limit as with what you can do and how it is displayed.
GTA 4 Gameplay Review
Graphics are a lot more realistic, especially when compared to previous rockstar games. The game is specially fun, i think simply because you can break the law. in fact most of the game is breaking the law, which makes people really want to play it, and almost get a sense of what it feels like to break the law. based on the marketing, it is pretty much exactly what i expected, however because i have played the grand theft auto games before, i kinda new what was coming. The only thing which i didnt expect was the high levels of violence, with newer weapons and newer moves, the game seemed ruthless. When we entered cheat codes into the game, the game seemed to add a lot more fun and enjoyable. We were basically playing to enjoy ourselves, and not concentrating on the story or missions. It is just a living, breathing city, that is used as a playground of destruction and chaos, all in the means of having fun. If your a serious type of gamer, the storyline will be more interesting without having to use cheat codes, whereas if you've got a few mates round and just want to have a laugh, cheats codes are defiantly worth using.

Marketing for Mario Kart Wii
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM7F_9fim84
UK trailer using the same technique of marketing involving celebrities to promote the game.
Analysis of trailer:
By having Celebrities play the game it catches the eye of the viewers and as the general public looks up to celebrities as role models this makes them think for example "if .... has it then it must be good!'
It is also a good advert because you can see people playing the game with the wheel so the audience can see the new equipment and how much fun the people are having when playing the game. In the advert you can not only see the people playing the game but you are able to see small clips of the game so it gives the audience a small idea of what its going to be like without giving too much away and keeping the mystery.
The advert indicates that there is no specific target audience as there is a big age range of people playing the game in the advert. This opens out the game to a wider audience and therefore makes more money.

Through the trailer, you can see that the product is aimed for children and people who have watched the newly released film. It begins with a clip from the film, making the audience fully aware of the link the game has to the film. Because it is a newly released film, people will recognise this clip therefore interested in the product. It then transforms into a cartoon world, again appealing to the younger audience with its simple animation. The soundtrack to it is full of mystery and wonderment. Viewing the console as it is playing, makes it look more simple and basic to play, also making the audience fully aware of the console on which to play the game.
The game has been marketed through trailers on websites
write up of gaming sesh
1) The controls were simple due to most buttons making you hit the ball, with either spins, curls, low and high.
2) This game would appeal to families who enjoy more casual gaming to hardcore gaming, or people who are really big fans of the sport, but have no room for a tennis table.
3) The experience of the game isn't wide enough or fun enough to make me want to go back and play more.
4) There are ads on billboards on the side of the arena, a bit like you would get in a real sport event, also the characters are real people who are famous in the sport.
Red Dead Revolver - Xbox
1) The game was very easy to play, although the shooting was somewhat inaccurate. However the game had a good mix of platformer and shooter.
2) Due to the rating of the game and its violent nature, the game is aimed at adults, particuly those who enjoy watching western movies, due to the references throughout the game.
3) The levels were rather mundane and repetitive-walking down the same train for two levels got boring.
4) The game takes inspiration from early western films.

1) The speed and the amount of damage you can do to your car is over the top and over dramatic, however this is the kind of racing games that I find fun, track racing is dull, but mind blowing speed and over the top tricks are exciting.
2) This game is aimed more at people who like fast cars, but prefer messing about in their own sandbox world.
3) There were a lot of choices of car (Although we had no money to buy any), so you will go back to unlock more faster models later on.
4) The music playing out of the car radio is from real bands.
Grand Theft Auto Vice City - Playstation 2
1)Although their is a main story in GTA games, they never seem to draw me in, all i ever did and still do on GTA is open up the cheatbook and spawn as many vehicles and weapons i can untill the game becomes fun. However i like the freedom to do this and the world that is built for you to explore.
2) This game is aimed at adults, and adult gaming. However many younger children play this game and enjoy it much more just because of the amount of freedom and variety they get with it.
3) As i said in 1 only fun for me when using cheats.
4) The radio has real songs from bands of the 80's, and the adverts inbetween the songs mock real adverts to give the player a laugh.
Bully - Playstation 2
1) Very much like GTA but with a younger protagonist, and a very slightly more innocent story, as there are no guns or stealing vehicles this time, however beating the crap out of the nearest passer by is still perfectly acceptable.
2) This game is aimed for fans of the GTA series, and people who are too young to go oout and buy GTA but want the same experience, also for people who really don't like their school, playing it means you can pretend to get revenge on your own school. Just without the possibility of getting expelled.
3) The minigames, like button pressing sequences are a good way of adding variety into the game.
4) Billboards and radios simmilar to the way in GTA.
